PARLOR

Portrait of Commodore Thomas MacDonough

This portrait, attributed to John Trumbull, depicts Commodore Thomas MacDonough. A Delaware native, he served in the United States Navy and engaged in several famous domestic and foreign battles. Most notably, he led the battle against the British in Plattsburg Bay on Lake Champlain in September of 1814. This was one of the most important victories of the War of 1812. MacDonough died on the frigate Constitution while at sea in 1825.
